The Biggest Trends for 2021 Fashion Week

London, Paris, New York, Milan, Copenhagen - over the last two months, the world’s best designers and their incredible models have jetted all around the world to showcase their 2022 collections. And what a show it was.

From the most popular colours and accessories to unique concepts we definitely didn’t see coming, I reveal my favourite looks - and the biggest trends - that you need to know about as we look ahead to the next 12 months.

Hard against soft

Almost every runway show seems to play masculinity off against femininity, and this year was no different. Christopher Kane’s collection in particular focused on this balance with pieces like soft fluffy white coats featuring harsh black leather collars. Talking about his pieces, Christoper said, “I loved working with a more minimalist approach for spring/summer 2022. I felt the need for clean structures and volume.”

This is an idea that I’ve been testing out in my own creative process - using clean lines and structural accessories on pieces while finishing it off with pretty, pastel shades.

Colour blocking

Colour blocking is the process of taking shades and colours that are on the opposite side of the colour wheel and pairing them together to make contrasting yet complementary combinations. It’s one of my favourite approaches when it comes to creativity and Dior did it so well in this year’s show.

Oranges were paired with blues, green and red were used together on a black skirt and coat, and the stage itself was accessorised with multi-coloured squares. Watch this space, I might experiment with colours in my next collection…

Over-the-top silhouettes

It’s not uncommon to see eccentric silhouettes and prints on the catwalk, and I wasn’t disappointed this year. Richard Quinn, Harris Reed, and Erdem were just some of the designers to showcase these trends - and the latter even featured a few incredible headpieces.

If you follow my collections, you’ll know that this is one of my favourite designs to take inspiration from. My SS21 collection featured bold colours, perched hat designs,  and Sinamay fabric to create overpowering and domineering looks. Plus, in my AW21 collection, I have some even bigger designs!

I’d love to hear about your favourite looks from this year’s Fashion Weeks. Drop me a message on social media. Don’t forget to give me a follow if you want to stay up to date with my millinery business. It’s where you’ll also see any sneak peeks of my upcoming designs.

In the meantime, my flagship store in London’s Oxo Tower is open for business again so why not pop in? I’d love to chat hat design, millinery inspiration and more so don’t be a stranger…
